Well good peoples, it’s been a long haul on the http://blog.becauseiamagirl.ca/ tour but every moment has been worth it. As the journey winds down, I wanted to visually update everyone with pieces from the road. We have now arrived in Winnipeg, the last leg of the tour. Along the way I have been bumping into students, either at the supermarket, restaurants or local stores that have seen the Girls Rights presentation. I have received such great feed back with regards to the presentation, and sincerely thanked that I have, as an artist, taken the time out of my schedule to help promote such an important message. I wanted to say thank you to all the wonderful people the crew has met on this tour. You all are the ambassadors to educate those around you about issues that effect girls around the world. Stay proud, rock your LIONESS and WARRIOR swagger you hear? One Love.

At one of the school presentations today, a student asked “Isn’t it more relevant to have a Girl’s Rights presentation like this in one of the countries where early marriage and other issues are happening…how is a “Because I Am a Girl” campaign relevant here in Canada?” I told to her that in my travels, I have met young ladies that lived below the poverty line yet somehow seemed so confident, self sufficient and comfortable to express themselves in creative ways. During my trip to a Plan site in Surabaya for example, I met the most beautiful girls that used drama presentations they put together themselves, to express issues that were pertinent to their community such as teachers trying to date younger female students and the hardships of finding sustenance while dreaming of the possibilities in the big city. In contrast, my time working in the music industry in L.A. has led me to meet some very pretty women that are all Hollywood hopefuls constantly doubting their appearances, remaining miserable about the state of their bodies and playing down their intelligence in order to appease others. I find it mind boggling that these women in such fortunate circumstances are less satisfied with themselves and their lives than girls that struggle to pay for school, books and travel great distances to get basic needs. What are some of the reasons for this?

One reason I started to uncover was, of course, the media – Here in North America we are perhaps more consistently bombarded by advertisements and ideals devised by someone in an office with a specific agenda. Surely in this day an age, we have made leaps and bounds in gender equality and representation of women in mainstream media. Let’s take a gander shall we?

BE SEXY AND STUPID

Most men DO ask is she pretty not is she CLEVER. I believe this is still the case today. The talent or intellectual prowess of a female is rarely celebrated in media and advertisements. I’ve noticed that even commercials targeting females (ie: tampons, soaps, cosmetics, shampoos) girls are depicted as giggly slumber party soul mates that twist one another’s hair and celebrate the ideals of feminine demure behavior. Recently the Miss USA 2010 pageant came on while I was unwinding from a day of shows, and I was horrified at the answers that most of the contestants gave to well thought out questions. There is of course nothing wrong with being pretty – but why must we celebrate the combination of pretty and stupid? With over 50% of the world’s women and girls illiterate…ladies if you can read and write, celebrate your education and independent thoughts.

Keep up the house while you keep down your weight!

HOUSEKEEPING

Most house work is still considered “Women’s work“. I thought about this statement at one of the presentations as we traveled through some more conservative towns in Canada – would it be offensive to some of the kids or even the teachers by upsetting what has come to be see as the cultural order of things? There are a slew of ads 1950s and beyond targeting women to do their jobs properly by purchasing a particular appliance or pleasing their husbands by keeping the house extra tidy. I wondered how this even became a cultural norm, then stumbled upon another more recent Hasbro ad marketing a “Rose Petal Cottage” to little girls. Start them young…and celebrate the joys of doing laundry, cleaning, taking care of babies and punctuated with “Taking care of my home is a dream, dream, dream…” (Last I checked laundry, cleaning and changing a poo ridden diaper was not my idea of a “dream”.) This commercial continues “Little girls, realize your dreams of growing up to do household chores!” Whoa, keep those aspirations high little girls…there’s no glass ceiling in the go-go world of homemaking.

DRIVING

The cliche that women are ALL bad drivers is notorious. A tag line from a 1960s VW beetle ad notes that “Women are soft and gentle, but they hit things”. Some of the best drivers I know are women! A more recent magazine ad depicts a women in a vulnerable position, hair up in Geisha girl fashion with man claw marks on her back. Dude…seriously?

BARBIE

“Barbie’s small and so petite,
Her clothes and figure look so neat…”

The ad that launched 150 000 000 eating disorders. The 1st Barbie ad aired during the Mickey Mouse Club and marketed as the “teenaged fashion model”. They were in fact some of the first toys to employ TV ads – and today 3 Barbie dolls are sold every second. Today Barbie is responsible for over 80% of the manufacturer Mattel’s profits.

In today’s mainstream for Hiphop, the only female rapper currently getting media attention is Nicky Minaj that has coined herself the “Harajuku Barbie”. Miss Minaj notes that “All girls are Barbies, we all want to play dress up and put on lipstick to look cute and sexy.” The comments on under the youtube clip that follows just says “Boobies…” followed by the eloquent “She’s got big boobies.” LOL. Mattel…your advertising department has done well. I’m not hating on Nicky if this is what she feels expresses her best. I would simply like to see a balance in how women are represented. For every Nicki Minaj there should be an MC Lyte.

NO IDENTITY

Whether 1950s or 2010…whether selling beer or body spray, nothing says “buy me” better then a body with no head.

So there you have it kiddies…1950s vs 2010. Beyond new ways to gloss the aesthetic and new technologies to get the images deep into the psyches of young girls many of the messages remain the same. I think I’m due for a trip back out to 9 mile in Jamaica or Pangeran in Surabaya Indonesia…at least to clear my mind of the ad busting clutter and celebrate life for the way we naturally are. All my rude gyals where you at? Holler at your girl.

It has been over 6 months since I’ve seen “home” and it is definitely starting to get to be a long journey on the road. That said, I probably would have become more homesick if my tour mates were not such amazing and interesting individuals! What better way to celebrate the roles of women and girls around the world then to be in the company of 2 of my favorite women? I had to write a few words about these fabulous ladies that I have been traveling with for the Because I Am a Girl School Tour.

Nana posing for the camera on our Mother's day cruise in Kelowna

NANA!

Website: www.nanaabaduncan

Nana’s Shoe Blog: www.thosekicks.tumblr.com

Occupation: Associate producer CBC Radio One & Two, Host for GO!

Superpower: Speaks and maintains the attention of 200 squirmy highschool kids, ability to turn Value Village into a fashion treasure trove.

Famous quotes: Om nom nom!

Miss Nana is a 5foot power house of inexhaustible energy! I got to know her on the first Girls Tour last year, and we got along immediately. I can’t figure out who talks more, the radio personality or the rapper, but it’s really great to meet another woman that is so passionate, opinionated and never afraid to express it. One thing I really love about Nana is her mix of go-getter attitude + the curiosity of a baby kitten. I ask her random questions like “If tectonic earth plates move slowly, what happens during an earthquake that shakes things up so quickly?”…if she doesn’t know the answer, before I can even say “Never mind” she’ll already be furiously Googling the topic and finding out all there is to know about it. She never accepts the answer that things are the way they are “just because”. We tour the Because I Am a Girl show to encourage students to refuse to be apathetic about the situation of girls around the world. I think Nana’s joie du vie and positive energy is the perfect inspiration to get involved and be the change you want to see. Thanks for being such an inspiration Naba-friend!

TAMARA!

Website: www.whatsthe411.ca

Occupation: Executive Director 411 Initiative for Change

Nicknames: Boss Lady, T-Pain

Superpower: Putting together 411 TV, organizing 100 emails, producing TV shows, making delicious pasta and typing out excel sheets all while watching Desperate Housewives.

Famous quotes: We have 20 minutes to eat, move it or loose it.

2 things I learned very quickly from being around Tamara. 1. Tamara is never wrong. 2. If you’re in doubt, refer to rule no. 1…Tamara is never wrong. I always felt that women are very good at multitasking, but T brings it to new levels. She single handedly organizes, creates, produces and directs, yet somehow finds the time to do the things that she likes in between. I learned from her that independent women can get very busy juggling all the different things we undertake in our lives, but it is always important to keep our standards high by striving for quality and balancing work with living life, thereby enjoying the journey.

What’s the 411 Initiative for Change, grew from an idea initiated in Highschool. She saw how irrelevant many of the school presentations were, and created her own program to both educate and entertain students. She endeavored to dispel stereotypes and organized her school’s first Black History Month lecture and even brought a Holocaust survivor to talk about Nazi genocide against Europe’s Jews. I think Tamara’s example should inspire the people we meet on this school tour as an example that you are never too young to get involved and make and impact.

Although T never steps into the limelight seeking for flashy acknowledgement for all she is capable of doing, she is confident and fearless. If she doesn’t know something, she researches and asks questions. No one is too big or important for her to cold call on the phone and make things happen. She knows what she likes and doesn’t like, and is extremely honest about her preferences. She has taught me that no matter how sugar’d your words or grand your schemes, organization, common sense and hard work is really what holds it down at the end of the day. When I finally decide to grow up, I hope I’ll be just like Tamara! LOL. Thanks for being my hero T!

Quick post as I’m late checking out of our hotel in Golden BC…Found this gem of a photo op just outside Kelowna BC yesterday. It’s been a great experience traveling across Canada to smaller towns and seeing the cultural diversity as well as, sometimes, the old school and ignorant mentalities still prevalent in many communities. I’ve gotten some SERIOUS ice grill stares in certain places! In the end, I’m enjoying the fact that I am a loud mouthed Asian Female going right into schools across our beautiful nation and shaking up some stereotypes that many people may have. In most cases, a lot of the kids are simply not exposed to diversity aside from what comes through the idiot box and youtube. I’ve been getting kids across Canada to put their FIAH STARTERS in the air and yell YAH YAH! Culture mashups are so satisfying to me.

Have a great Wednesday party friends! - Masia. One Love.

I had a great day visiting schools in Thunderbay! The girls out here were so LIVE and friendly! In the morning we heading out to Goreham Ware and followed that up with Winston Churchill in the afternoon. I found the Q & A portion of the show very interesting today as many of the girls asked really great questions and shared stories of challenges they faced as girls growing up in the community of THUNDERBAY. Everything from being told they couldn’t play football, to facing domestic abuse in the house hold to even being discriminated against for not only being a girl, but for their race and culture.

I definitely faced a lot of discrimination when I was growing up in Vancouver as a kid whose family had immigrated to Canada at the age of 9. I spoke English with a SINGAPOREAN ACCENT (SINGLISH), had the nerdiest clothes (my brother’s hand me downs) and was the biggest tom boy (my hair covered my eyes most of the time). At a pretty young age I got into Hiphop culture and this became my escape and private way of expressing myself. I used to bump PUBLIC ENEMY at the loudest volume my Sony Cassette player could muster and jump frantically up and down on my bed singing a long and venting my frustrations of how no one could relate to me. Soon after I discovered a Graffiti writer named LADY PINK, and I couldn’t believe a woman was allowed to do what she was doing…tagging up walls and creating pieces (WILDSTYLE BURNERS) with the guys. I started drawing on EVERYTHING! My school books, binders, tables…and this became another creative outlet for the isolation that I felt. I remember at a high school dance in grade 6, I would dance the way I wanted to and some of the kids would look at me like I was a total freak. At this particular dance I was wearing size 40 neon red jeans with a matching neon red shirt. Everyone else dressed much more conservatively. The DJ of the dance had brought a crew of Bboys with him, and I noticed they were dressed in a similar fashion to me for the first time in my life! Midway through the dance, one of the bboys approached me, told me he appreciated how different my style was and asked if I wanted to learn to break dance. I had recently discovered a female break dancer named ASIA ONE and was thrilled to learn to do what she could do. Long story short, I met up with these bboys after school every other day and learned how to uprock, 6 step and do some basic freezes! They used to kid around and call me MASIA ONE because I looked up to Asia One so much! All these years later, I would never think that I would be making a living as a rapper with the stage name Masia One, but all great stories have to start somewhere…you just have to be willing to take the first step and be unafraid of who you are.

I want to encourage all the girls I met today to support one another and not buy into the “catty, gossipy, bullying” image that reality TV always portrays of women. In the end, it’s such a waste of time. If you’re being picked on, please be strong and learn to develop your unique beauty. Maybe right now it feels like no one understands or picks on your for who you are, but learn more about what you love, develop your skills and share with those who will listen. It’s always best to keep focused on the positive and let the bullies, bigots and negatoids wallow in their own unhappiness. Lionesses have no time for such riff raff. Big up all my warriors!

ps: As promised, pictures are posted below!

One Love

November 16. 2009 We hit the road driving up North from Toronto. The first school, Hillcrest was a great attentive crowd of kids. I unfortunately was not yet ready to switch from L.A. life to student schedule waking up around 5:30am and arriving at the school shortly after 7am. I couldn’t believe Nana had woken up early for a run, and Eternia was her usual morning efficient self. I am always pleased to share a room with tour manager Tamara, as she is subtly assertive and keeps me in check (ie: up and out of bed!)

We headed out to our second show in Brechin, where we met up with a principle that we performed for last year that has since transferred to another school. Backstage I had the pleasure to parlay with some guys, curious as to why they had been excluded from the Girl’s presentation. I asked them what they thought the show was about, and they giggled and said it was probably about girl stuff and sex ed. LOL. I asked them who they would like to meet and a string of names poured out including Hannah Montana, Brad Pit and The Rock. Go figure…pretty random Hollywood bunch if you ask me! I promised them that I would shout their names out on the mic (especially Trent who indicated his girlfriend was in the crowd). 6 schools of girls had come together for the presentation, and their energy was really wonderful. The autograph line was long. Eternia and I received the most random things to sign including stinky sneakers, posters, bags and one request for her face! Thanks Brechin…had a blast!

November 17. 2009 This morning was especially painful to wake up. I have to cut down my 3am email work nights before waking for 6am! We arrived at Mary Mount school to a pretty skilled Volleyball team occupying our set up time. We got things underway for set up, a quick sound check and I disappeared to the bathroom to splash ample amounts of water on my face. I returned to find out my show CDs disappeared! We searched, asked the teachers at the school for a blank CD (so I could burn a new show disc) but no luck. One of the teachers even offered me a casette tape instead!!!??? We finally located a blank disc at the neighboring school, Macguiver’d a new show disc and away we go! I was really impressed at the questions the young ladies at Mary Mount asked…One girl asked me if I would ever stop believing in what I did. It’s hard question to answer as I would immediately like to retort NOOO WAY!!! There are so many choices to be made in the music industry both on the creative side as well as with business, that sometimes it gets difficult to stay grounded to what first inspired an artist to write and create. I have to say, doing the school tours, and reaching out to young people that have that innocence of spirit, and warrior energy is always an inspiration for me to keep believing in what I do. Thanks Ladies!

I had the opportunity to visit a PLAN COMMUNITY over the past summer while I was touring in SE Asia (and surfing in BALI) traveling to Surabaya, Indonesia. The young people that met in Pengeran were so inspiring using plays they had written to express the issues they faced in their community, and allowing the performances to be a platform by which discussions could initiate and solutions could be developed.

A quick stint in Hollywood has me back in wonderful Ontario, working with Plan once again (in collaboration with The 411) starting a tour traveling up North to promote the “Because I Am a Girl” campaign. I hope to meet many wonderful young ladies on this tour, and learn from them the issues they face growing up in Canada as a woman. Moreover, I hope to share to the girls the privileged position they hold because they live in Canada, and inspire ambassador causes for young woman world wide and spread the word about what they learn. 20 million girls cannot go to school and as a result, 50% of the world’s women cannot read or write. 1 in 3 women will face abuse in her life time. One billion people live in extreme poverty – 70 per cent are women and girls. These are alarming statistics and I hope to be ONE of the people contributing to the solution, both through my experiences and in my music.

For all you wonderful gyals I’ll be meeting across Ontario…can’t wait to get my left hand messy with black ink from signing too many autographs and sharing our HERstories. One Love.

We are honoured to be working with Plan Canada to incorporate their international content into the program. Through the wonders of new media, we can create the concept of live-to-air taping – with satellite feeds for guest interviews.”
