I had the pleasure of taking a short trip to meet PLAN INDONESIA in Surabaya to learn about some of the work this organization is doing there to support the people in the community. I’ve done some work with Plan Canada through What’s the 411’s highschool tours and jumped at the opportunity to check out what PLAN (formerly FOSTER PARENTS PLAN) does internationally.
The experience was great and showed me how an organization can be make an impact by being involved on different levels early on in the education process. When Plan Indonesia first heard I was visiting, they only knew it was an artist from Canada and assumed it would be Celine Dion. LOL. I met some of the most beautiful people that were open and friendly to me and most of all, I fell in love with the energy, inspiration, strength and talent of the youth I met in Surabaya. They performed their plays for me, and though there was a language barrier I understood the stories they told and was deeply moved. One of the girls asked me not to forget “The voices of the Indonesian children”. Don’t worry…I won’t.

Never trust the signs in Indonesian airports, arrive 2 hours early or the plane might leave without you if the plane is mostly full.

Look left and right before you cross the runway, or a plane might hit you.
